But let’s back up…
Is it hard to grill chicken?
Are you like me and was once afraid to use any other method other than baking chicken because you didn’t know how to use a grill? Yep, I’ve been there. I used to think grilling was just for men and would have to beg my dad or boyfriend to go on and grill for me.
In our house, my mom was in charge of the inside kitchen work while my dad did all the grilling, and I don’t think I’m alone in this regard. Grills have a manly reputation, it almost comes naturally for us to just assume that men do all the grill work!
Well, this honey mustard chicken recipe is going to prove that wrong. It’s a healthier twist on a traditional easy honey mustard chicken recipe, free of refined sugar and preservatives.
Once you make these, you will want to try my Healthy BBQ Chicken Thighs and then you will know two chicken recipes to make on the grill.
What kind of chicken is best for grilling?
Any kind! Seriously, we grill chicken tenders for this recipe, but you can also grill chicken breasts, chicken legs, or chicken thighs! They all will be delicious for this recipe, you may just need to adjust the cooking time.
Grilled Honey Mustard Chicken
This grilled honey mustard chicken recipe will be your new favorite easy dinner and meal prep! Healthy grilled chicken tenders that go perfectly on their own, on a salad, or even in a wrap!
Prep: 30 ; Cook: 10 ; Total: 40 minutes
Ingredients
- 3 lbs chicken tenders
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1/2 tsp salt
Honey Mustard Sauce:
- 1/3 cup dijon or spicy brown mustard
- 1/3 cup honey
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- *1 tsp minced garlic if not added above
Instructions
- Place chicken tenders in a bag with 2 tbsp olive oil, garlic, and salt. Marinate in fridge for 30 minutes.
- Prepare honey mustard sauce by combining mustard, honey, 3 tbsp olive oil, salt and pepper.
- Split the sauce in half and save half for later.
- Grease your grill well.
- Turn the grill up to 425 degrees and once hot, place your chicken tenders on.
- These chicken tenders don’t have any sauce on them yet, so you will essentially be grilling them naked. *You can grill them with the sauce directly on them right away, just be aware that the sugar crystals in the honey will burn and leave a deeper char.
- Grill the tenders for three minutes and then flip. Once you have flipped them for the first time, brush with a hefty dose of honey mustard sauce.
- Close the lid and let them grill for another 3 minutes.
- After three minutes are up, flip back over again and brush the other side with honey mustard sauce.
- Close the lid and grill for two minutes.
- Flip one more time to get grill marks on both sides (thanks to the sugar crystals in the honey burning, causing a nice char).
- Remove tenders once internal temperature reaches 165F, about 8-10 minutes total.
- Serve with remaining honey mustard sauce.
